The definition of material handling is the short distance movement of materials or goods within a storage area, involving packing, unpacking, loading, unloading, palletizing, de-palletizing, shipping, etc.  It  involves the movement within the restrictions of a building or between a building and a transportation vehicle.

It uses an extensive variety of manual, semi-computerized, and mechanized hardware and incorporates thought of the protection, storage, and control of materials throughout their manufacturing, warehousing, distribution, consumption, and transfer.

It also may be utilized to make time and place utility through the handling, storage,capacity, and control of material, as unmistakable from manufacturing, which makes form utility by changing the shape, structure, and cosmetics of material
